This is my favorite portable charger of all time. It's been with me in a number of off-grid situations in various countries, and it has never let me down. It has enough capacity to keep my devices topped up between proper recharges, and enough power to charge everything from my earbuds to laptop.

What size power bank do I need?
Tough question. If you want an emergency power bank to act as a backup, then a small 5000mAh power bank will do the job. If you want a lot of power, and perhaps the ability to charge up a laptop, then the bigger the better (and as big as you want to carry!).
Or, you might be looking for the Goldilocks of portable power banks. With these, you gain enough power to charge tablets or phones on the go.
What's the largest power bank I can take on an aircraft?
Power banks up to 100Wh (100,000mAh) can be carried without approval. For power banks that fall between 100Wh and 160Wh, you will need permission from the airline.
Typically, you can contact the airline's customer service ahead of your flight. Doing so this helps you understand their process for approval and can save you a lot of time at the airport, as customer service lines can be longer than a digital queue for Taylor Swift tickets.
Also, when going through normal screening at TSA, treat your power bank as you would a laptop, gaming console, or phone.
Are power banks waterproof?
There are some power banks that claim to be water-resistant. However, I've never been comfortable with the idea of getting a pack filled with lithium batteries wet. I always keep them dry. You should also keep them in a waterproof bag. That way, you prevent them from incurring water damage during rainy weather.
What do you think of power banks that have a built-in solar panel?
I have yet to come across a good one. I'm also not comfortable baking rechargeable batteries in the sun for extended periods. We've analyzed the best portable solar chargers that you can consider as an alternative.
However, keep in mind these are more suited for outdoor use. As solar technology continues to evolve, it's possible that solar panels will be built into power banks moving forward.
