Shanghai backs gaming and esports growth
Publish Time: 30 Dec, 2025

A new policy aims to support Shanghai's gaming and esports industry, including a 50 million yuan annual fund. The plan focuses on helping local developers expand into overseas markets.

Original games are prioritised to drive industry growth and cultural exports linked to Shanghai's identity. Authorities also encourage partnerships with education and healthcare to expand practical applications.

Additional measures support copyright protection, payment systems and international advertising. Esports clubs will receive incentives as Shanghai works to attract major global tournaments.

The initiative reflects China's booming gaming sector, which grew nearly 10% to a record 350.8 billion yuan in 2025. National and provincial policies, including Guangdong and Zhejiang, further support gaming as a driver of economic and cultural growth.
