Key takeaways

  • YouTube Premium Lite just got two new features.
  • Lite subscribers can now download videos and use background play.
  • Full Premium costs $14 a month, while Lite is $8 a month.

If you've been on the fence about whether a YouTube Premium subscription is worth the price, your choice just got a little easier.

YouTube this week announced two big additions to its $8-a-month Premium Lite -- the ability to download videos and the option to keep videos playing in the background for "most videos." Previously, these were reserved for the $14-a-month Premium option.

The new features are available starting today, YouTube says, and will continue rolling out over the next few weeks. Not only do the additions bring some long-requested options for the less expensive tier, but they also make the decision between the two options much easier. In fact, there's only one group of people who need full YouTube Premium now.

Here's how to decide.

The biggest difference between YouTube Premium Lite and YouTube Premium

Both Premium and Premium Lite get you ad-free viewing, downloads, and background play. The biggest difference is that Lite provides these features for most videos, not all of them. YouTube explains that ads may appear on music content, Shorts, and when you search or browse.

The biggest difference now is music. The higher tier includes all the benefits of music content, and it gives you ad-free listening on the YouTube Music app. Ad removal is nice, but since you can skip most ads after only a few seconds, it's hard to justify either subscription if that's your main goal.

If you watch a lot of YouTube content or use it often for recipes, home repairs, and crafts, the Lite subscription is now a fantastic value compared to full Premium. The only reason to jump to the more expensive plan is if you consume a lot of music content or use YouTube Music.

Both Premium and Premium Lite have a free trial if you're interested in test-driving before you commit.
