Data protection authorities from 61 regions have issued a joint warning about risks linked to AI-generated photorealistic imagery. Regulators said misuse of GenAI tools is enabling non-consensual intimate images and defamatory content involving real individuals.

Authorities expressed particular concern for children and other vulnerable groups, citing cyberbullying and exploitation. The statement follows recent controversies surrounding AI-generated sexualised images shared on social media platforms including X.

Regulators in Europe, including France's Public Prosecutor's Office and the UK's Ofcom, have announced investigations into the creation and distribution of such material. Users were reminded that producing non-consensual intimate imagery may result in criminal prosecution.

Signatories urged companies to implement safeguards from the outset and engage proactively with regulators. They stressed that technological progress in AI must respect privacy, dignity, safety and fundamental rights worldwide.
